Goodwood

Set high on the South Downs with genuinely spectacular views, Goodwood is one of the most distinctive tracks in Britain - and one of the trickiest, which makes its showpiece Glorious Goodwood meeting every summer a real form puzzle as much as a social occasion.

The track

A right-handed course with sharp undulations and several tight turns, Goodwood asks real questions of balance and positioning - horses drawn awkwardly or ridden too far back can find themselves with a mountain to climb, quite literally, given the course's uphill sections.

Glorious Goodwood

Held over five days at the end of July into August, the meeting is headlined by the Sussex Stakes (one of the season's top mile championships) and the Goodwood Cup, alongside a packed card of Group racing across sprinters, milers and stayers.

Betting angle

Draw and early position matter more at Goodwood than at fairer, flatter tracks - a horse drawn wide or ridden too patiently can be doing all its best work too late. Course form here is a genuinely strong angle, more so than at a track like York.
