Doncaster

Doncaster claims to be the oldest racecourse still operating in Britain, and hosts the final Classic of the Flat season - the St Leger - each September, alongside the Lincoln Handicap that traditionally opens the turf Flat season in the spring.

The track

A big, flat, left-handed galloping course - similar in character to York - with a long home straight that suits proven stayers and horses who like to be delivered late, though it's fair enough that genuine class tends to tell.

The St Leger Festival

The oldest of the five British Classics, the St Leger is run over an extended mile and three-quarters in September - the true test of stamina among the Classic generation, often deciding which three-year-old stayers go on to the top of the division.

Betting angle

The extended St Leger trip is a genuine stamina test that not every smart three-year-old gets right first time - proven stamina, whether from a previous run over further or strong staying pedigree, is worth real weight here over pure Classic form from shorter trips earlier in the season.
