Trixie, Patent, Lucky 15 and Canadian Bets Explained

Once you've got your head around a Yankee, the rest of the multiples family is easy - they're all built on exactly the same idea, just with a different number of selections. Here's the full picture for the smaller, more common ones.

The core idea (same for all of them)

Every bet in this family combines your selections into every possible double, treble, and so on, so you don't need every selection to win to get some money back - unlike a straight accumulator, where one loser kills the whole bet.

The number of selections determines the name, and the number of bets inside it:

The key distinction: with singles or without

Notice the pattern - for every selection count, there are two versions: one without singles (Trixie, Yankee, Canadian, Heinz) and one with singles (Patent, Lucky 15, Lucky 31, Super Heinz/Goliath variants exist too).

  • Without singles: you need at least 2 winners to get any money back, since the smallest bet inside is a double.
  • With singles: a single winner alone gets you something back, because each selection is also backed individually. This costs more (more bets = bigger total stake) but gives you a safety net even if only one selection comes in.

Trixie vs Patent is the clearest example: same 3 selections, but a Trixie is 3 bets (all doubles/treble) while a Patent is 7 bets (adds the 3 singles). A Patent costs more than double a Trixie's stake for that extra layer of protection.

A worked example: Lucky 15

Say you pick 4 horses at 5/1, 4/1, 3/1, and 7/1, in a £1 Lucky 15 (£15 total stake - 15 bets at £1 each).

If only your 5/1 shot wins and the other 3 lose:

  • The single on that horse pays out: £1 x 5/1 = £5 winnings + £1 stake back = £6
  • Every double, treble, and the fourfold lose (they all needed at least one more winner)
  • Total return: £6 from a £15 stake - a loss overall, but not a total wipeout, which is exactly the point of including singles

If you'd backed the same 4 in a Yankee instead (no singles), that single winner would have returned £0 - the whole bet would have lost outright.

Many bookmakers also offer a "one winner" bonus on Lucky 15s (and similar bets) - extra consolation payout or bonus odds if only one selection wins, on top of the single bet return. Terms vary by bookmaker, so it's worth checking before you bet.

Which one should you use?

  • Fewer selections you're confident in (2-3 strong fancies) → Trixie or Patent.
  • A bigger group with mixed confidence (4-5 selections, some safer than others) → Lucky 15 or Lucky 31, so a single decent result still returns something.
  • Want the cheapest way to cover every combination without singles → Yankee, Canadian, or Heinz, depending on selection count.
